Playable sculptures that blur the boundary between musical instruments and functional objects.
Playable sculptures that blur the boundary between musical instruments and functional objects.

The project aims to explore ways to create emotional value in furniture and home accessories, drawing inspiration from the craft of violin-making. By examining the materials, production techniques, and user interactions of violins, we aim to identify key elements that contribute to their emotional value and translate these into furniture and home accessories. The goal is to create objects that hold similar emotional significance for users, elevating them from mere functional objects to treasured possessions.

FACTS

What if furniture and home accessories could hold the same emotional value for users as violins, similar to how violins hold emotional value for musicians, and how can designers build this value?

In order to understand what creates an emotional value between musicians and their instruments, I conducted interviews with luthiers and musicians. During the interviews, the object-user interaction was emphasized multiple times as the most important element of a violin. While such a decision may seem obvious to musicians, it was surprising to learn that designers and artists also viewed interaction and the ability to play as the most crucial element of an instrument, without focusing much on other values such as materials, colour, finish, or construction.

The goal was to create playable sculptures that blur the boundary between musical instruments and functional objects. Based on an examination of the design and history of violins and conducting interviews with luthiers, I set out to incorporate elements of instruments like the violin, kalimba, and brass instruments into everyday objects such as vases and bowls.
