The moment I decided to open my design studio, I knew it had to be a space that not only inspired creativity but also reflected my unique aesthetic. I envisioned a place where every corner sparked ideas and where clients felt the essence of my design philosophy the moment they walked through the door. The journey from finding the right space to unveiling my dream studio was nothing short of a transformative experience. Here’s how it all unfolded.
Finding the Perfect Space
The hunt for the ideal location was both thrilling and challenging. I needed a place with great natural light, enough room for some workstations, and a vibe that resonated with my design ethos. After months of searching, I stumbled upon a quaint, but extremely dilapidated space in the heart of the town. It was love at first sight – I saw potential where others saw disrepair. The high ceilings and large windows were the perfect canvas for my vision.
Starting During the Pandemic
Like many, my journey took a unique turn during the pandemic. I lost my job in fair trade design as all events were cancelled. This unexpected change led me to move into furniture design and marketing for manufacturing companies, working closely with Polish manufacturers. The pivot was both challenging and rewarding. After launching my first furniture collection, I decided to set up my own design practice, working remotely with clients from all over the world. This period taught me the value of adaptability and innovation in design.
Working from London and Krotoszyn
After two years of remote work, I made the decision to go to London to study at the Royal College of Art, seeking further knowledge, tools, and inspiration for my work. London, with its rich design history and vibrant contemporary scene, pushed me to think outside the box. After finishing my studies, I decided to return to Poland to continue my work. Krotoszyn provided a quieter, more introspective environment where I could refine my ideas. Balancing these two worlds helped shape my approach to design and deepened my appreciation for diverse influences.
Planning the Renovation
Once I secured the space, the real work began. Planning the renovation was crucial. I started with a clear vision board, outlining every detail from the color palette to the furniture layout. I wanted the studio to have a timeless look with a touch of modern elegance. Importantly, as an artist trying to make a living, I had to consider the budget carefully. Most of the items inside the studio are my own designs, either manufactured or bespoke. Here’s a glimpse into the key elements of the renovation:
Lighting: Good lighting is vital in any design studio. I installed a mix of Bricks pendant lights, designed by our Studio and manufactured by Zaho Lighting.
Open Floor Plan: To foster collaboration and creativity, I opted for an open floor plan. Workstations are strategically placed to create a flow that encourages movement and interaction.
Storage Solutions: Designers accumulate a lot of materials, samples, and tools. I incorporated custom-built shelves and cabinets that not only provided ample storage but also added to the aesthetic appeal.
Comfortable Workspaces: Spacious desks and cosy lounge areas were essential. My Nubi collection is the main point of the studio with its cosiness and soft shapes.
Personal Touches: To make the space uniquely mine, I added personal touches like framed sketches, plants, and a curated selection of design books and magazines
The Renovation Process
With a clear plan in place, the renovation work began. I worked closely with a trusted contractor who understood my vision. The process had its ups and downs – there were unexpected challenges like dealing with old wiring and uneven floors, but each hurdle was a learning experience. Watching the transformation was incredibly rewarding. From the demolition of old structures to the installation of new fixtures, every step brought me closer to my dream studio.
